Human rights are rights we have simply because we exist as human beings - they are not granted by any state/government. These universal rights are inherent to us all, regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status.
Human Rights are:
Universal and Inalienable
Apply to all. Cannot be taken away.
Indivisible and Interdependent
Cannot be broken apart. All are woven together.
Equal and Non-discriminatory
Apply equally to all human beings.
States (countries) are obligated to Respect, Protect, and Fulfill human rights
" There are 9 core international human rights instruments. Each of these instruments has established a committee of experts to monitor implementation of the treaty provisions by its States parties." (OHCHR)
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), ratified on December 10, 1948, stands as a landmark in the realm of human rights advocacy. Serving as the most widely-accepted document on human rights, its principles resonate globally, guiding nations towards a more just and equitable society. Despite its universal acclaim, it's crucial to note that the UDHR is not legally binding; rather, it serves as a moral compass, defining fundamental rights and setting standards for countries to aspire to and implement within their legal frameworks. This seminal declaration encapsulates the essence of human dignity and forms the foundation upon which efforts to uphold and protect human rights are built worldwide.
