Dayton United for Human Rights (DUHR) coalition is a grassroot organization instrumental in the idea of Dayton, OH becoming a Human Rights City. In order for a city to become a Human Rights City one must understand the four-tier partnership that is needed for this to be successful. First, is the community which is DUHR, then government being City of Dayton Commission, University of Dayton representing the local university and the Dayton Metro Libraries. Over the past two years, DUHR has worked to uplift civic engagement, establish relationships with the City of Dayton commission and utilized the libraries as access points to educate, meet and disseminate information. In December of 2023, the City of Dayton commission unanimously passed a resolution committing to become a Human Rights City in 2025 and to assess the current organizational environment of the government including City infrastructure, staffing, services, protection, and practices associated with human rights principles. In March of 2024, Dayton Commission put out RFP’s for a qualified company to conduct the assessment.

Dayton Ohio has a housing crisis with a history redlining, increased homeless populations, blighted vacant structures and decline in housing inventory. During the last three months of 2023, Dayton United for Human Rights Coalition collaborated with Dayton Tenant Union to advocate for a monetary element to be added to the recently passed housing policy (Resolution 6762-23). In addition, we also advocated to have housing be a component of the tax levy renewal (Our Neighborhood and our Dollars) for 2024. As a result, city commissioners agreed to direct $1.1 million dollars to housing but since then has not conveyed to the community how the money will be used. October 7, 2023 is a day forever engraved in our memories and the chilling scenes of lives lost; though gruesome, underscore the imperative for decisive action and call for immediate ceasefire. Nearly 34, 500 people have been killed and 77, 867 have been wounded in the Gaza Strip with 70% of them being women and children (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)). This war has driven about 2.3 million of Gaza people out of their homes and approximately 8,000 are missing. The Dayton United for Human Rights coalition participated in a demonstration to cease fire.
